Brazil Isao Grinder

Mr. Isao Suzuki is a Japanese agronomist- he studied at Hokkaido University- then came to Brazil in the 80s. He had a future already set for him in Japan, but decided to go to Brazil to start a new and very different life. He began as an employee at the farm. He married a Brazilian woman with a Japanese background. The farm Mr. Suzuki purchased in 1986 is the farm he cultivates today.

The farm has 63 hectares and is located in Paracatu City in the very North of Minas Gerais state. When he took ownership of the farm, it was already a coffee plantation. In the beginning he worked only with conventional coffee. He decided to become certified organic five years ago, promptly changing his agriculture techniques. Life was very difficult at first, as his production went down and for the first 3 years he had to sell his coffee as conventional. Today his average production consists of 500 bags per year. Mr. Isao has 3 children, his two boys study agriculture and his daughter now lives in Japan. For Mr. Isao Suzuki, organic production methods are not being used at his farm for profit or marketing appeal, but rather being implemented because of his belief system.
