Now Afloat...El Salvador Monterey: ECOQ
Elan is proud to offer El Salvador Monterey Certified Organic ECOQ
Rainforest Alliance Coffee.  ECOQ, Elan Code of Quality, is the basis of a production schedule which represents the 4 pillars of sustainability and quality: Cup Quality, Biodiversity, Social Responsibility and Transparency. In practice, ECOQ is a detailed schedule for: harvesting, planting, milling, exporting and importing. All coffees are first and foremost evaluated on cup quality. ECOQ is Elan Organic Coffees' commitment to quality coffees which are grown promoting biodiversity and social excellence while working towards strategic partnerships to create profitability and success for all producers and roasters from tree to cup. ECOQ will reduce the impact of the certification process on the farmers.

Elan presents its first ECOQ
certified Estate Farm: Monterey. Monterey is a 100% Organic Bourbon Estate and is located near El Imposible National Park, where over 500 species of butterflies, 300 species of birds and 30 species of mammals take refuge.
Elan has 250 bags of Monterey Estate Certified Organic ECOQ Rainforest Alliance afloat to The Annex

Cup Characteristics include a nice winy acidity, a roasted almond aroma, spicy, rich body, clean, pleasant mouth feel, hints of berry. A very well balanced cup.

Elan Travels to Ethiopia
Elan's General Manager Erika Hernandez just returned from a two week mission in Ethiopia. Her purpose in Addis Ababa was to train 26 exporters on contract execution and sales strategy improvement with an emphasis on organic and traceability. Elan in turn was able to learn more about coffee production and quality control in Ethiopia.

Erika had the opportunity to visit the Auction House and Coffee Liquoring Unit located in Addis Ababa, where she shared details about Elan's cup grading system, transparency and traceability requirements. Topics covered included branding and the importance and value of having bags marked clearly, the relationships between exporters and suppliers/importers and what exporters can offer to buyers and suppliers as their strengths.

"It was motivating and inspiring to hear the individual exporters share their feedback and experiences with the group," said Erika. "I could see they were interested in learning about traceability and improving the quality of Ethiopian Coffees, not just as individual exporters but rather as a whole. Overall it was a wonderful trip and most importantly a great learning experience."

The current coffee area in Ethiopia is 405,000 hectares, which is mostly grown in the south; about 85% is Garden Coffee, Forest and Semi-forest and very few Estate Coffees. Ethiopia produces 270,000 tons of coffee per year. 155,000 tons are exported, while the other 45% is used for internal consumption. 75% of coffees grown in Ethiopia are natural processed and 25% are washed. Ethiopia is working hard to improve coffee quality. Elan Organic Coffees donated cupping aprons to the 10 new coffee labs that are being installed to help producers understand cup quality.
Through traveling and working directly with origin, Elan will help develop, source and certify ECOQ
the highest quality coffees in the world.
