Peru La Florida
Peru La Florida was founded in 1966. Initially
the cooperative consisted of 100 farmers who hoped to combine and
market their coffee at better prices and thereby attain a greater
level of development. Today La Florida has over 1500 producer
associates, all small coffee farmers who represent 36 communal
groups, including Peruvian Sierra colonies and indigenous
communities.
Elan began working with La Florida in 1995. Concerned about the
increasing number of toxic agrochemicals being introduced into rural
communities, La Florida approached Elan to help implement a program
to encourage organic growers to continue using traditional growing
methods. Today there are over 183 certified organic producers
participating in La Florida's organic program. These members are now
training their neighbors to improve their harvests through using
sustainable agriculture.

News on Peru
In a country where an easy way to make ends meet is to grow coca,
the raw material for cocaine, it is very important to support
cooperatives that are working together using sustainable agriculture
to deliver a top quality coffee bean to the market. Cooperative La
Florida is working hard to improve our planet by developing a
socially responsible product. This top quality coffee is also
improving the quality of life for the farmer members that are
receiving fair trade benefits from Elan.
