Tigers, Monkeys and Elephants OH MY!
Elan Organic Coffees traveled to India with a small group of coffee connoisseurs in January 07. Adventurers joining Elan included Grace Mena from Costa Rica, Jason Remmer from Swiss Water, the British twins who own Pannikin San Diego, Maureen McHugh from Equator Estate Coffees and Margaret Swallow, past Executive Director of Coffee Quality Institute.
Karen Cebreros recalls the adventure vividly...
"Latin America may struggle with Broca, but India has monkeys, elephants and tigers! Monkeys love the ripe cherries. Indonesia has Kopi Luwak and India has monkeys eating their best coffees! India has not yet learned that they can market the recycled beans for $200 per pound... Elephants are known to trample through the forest in the dry season looking for water, while tigers make coffee forests their home and can be a problem with the farmers' dogs. The biodiversity is magnificent!
We cupped some outstanding coffees. In addition to world class Arabica, we cupped world class washed organic Robusta in a blind cupping. In some cases, the professional cuppers were not able to recognize the Robusta by sight or cup!
Forty-five foot shade trees towered over one of the most exotic forests I have ever seen. The 81 year old founder of the Estate carted up and down the hills explaining how he pioneered certified organic 35 years ago. He won an award in the coveted "Flavour of India," The Fine Cup Award Cupping Competition in 2002. In May 2007, his boutique washed Plantation A Arabica  will be arriving in North America. Words can not do justice to this bold, rich floral cup.

Indian Organic Available in May 2007
Elan Organic Coffees is importing an organic Indian from the "Jasmine" Estate in May 2007! The Estate spreads over 152 acres Chikamagalur District in Karnataka State. It was planted in 1888 and for a long time most of the produce was sent to London. In 1973 the Estate was acquired by K.R. Sethna. Sethna's background as an environmentalist and an ornithologist motivated him to convert the entire estate to organic cultivation in 1989. The Estate was certified organic by SKAL in 2002. The Estate is currently owned by U.M. Ramesh Rao and S. Dinakar Rao.
The best Arabica, which Elan will be importing, is grown at about 3,800 feet in forest-alluvial and humus-rich soil, under a mixed canopy of 40 to 45 f
oot native shade trees that also help to conserve the natural flora and fauna and soil of the Estate.
"The country is magic, the people are extraordinarily kind and the coffee is beyond belief. We look forward to sending you a sample and you too will experience an adventure in
every cup!" -Karen Cebreros CEO and Founder of Elan Organic Coffees.
Elan's cupping notes include a sweet floral aroma, jasmine notes throughout the cup, very consistent, clean, sweet, outstanding body, creamy and pleasant mouth feel, long pleasant aftertaste. This coffee will be arriving in May 2007. Please contact Elan for details on booking.
